About Montessori

The Montessori Method was developed by Italian physician Dr. Maria Montessori. She began her first “Children’s House,” or “Casa dei Bambini,” in 1907 and developed special material to teach these children. She believed that all children were intelligent and capable of a great deal of things. Her teachings focused on independence and a deep respect for the child.

Dr. Montessori’s research, observation, and experience led her to create a philosophy that holds at its core a deep respect for children and their ability to learn. She believed that children should have beautiful, peaceful environments in which to learn. Montessori children learn in multi-aged classrooms, where they can interact with others of various developmental stages. These classrooms are prepared to allow children to move freely and learn from their environment. Montessori believed in teaching the whole child. This means making sure that the child’s social, emotional, and physical needs are all being met.
